I've been directing for more than 40 years and never been pigeonholed as a "type". I've successfully directed Drama, Comedy, Musical Comedy, Classics and Experimental pieces, because all theatre is reflective of the human condition. There is an amazing commonality in the human experience. We laugh at funerals, for example. There is comedy in tragedy and visa-versa. Looking for the common humanity will always be the best guide a director can embrace, or at least that how I came to the craft.
I had a wonderful directing mentor/professor in college. He had an unique way of simplifying the complex collaborative process of directing into a short list of commitments. When you take on a directing assignment you are, in fact entering into a series of immutable social contracts that are deceptively simple to state and devilishly difficult to live up to.

I grew up in suburban New Jersey and was in 7th grade when I auditioned for my first play (for the historians among you, I was cast as a "Workhouse Boy" and a "Member of Fagin's Gang" in, "Oliver!").
From a 13 year old singing about gruel to today (north of 50 years later) I have been in love with the process of storytelling through performance.
What's my "type"? Over the years I have gracefully transitioned from leading man to character actor. I have always owned a mirror, understood what I look like and been comfortable with the range of roles that presents, BUT, I do love me some Shakespeare!
Although I have done a lot of comedy, I've always found the process is the same, whatever genre: Find the truth and convey that to an audience.
Comedy or Tragedy come from character. The material dictates whether an audience laughs or cries.
Me? I'm a capable craftsperson always in search of the truth, or as least my character sees it.
For the last 20 years I have been teaching; informally as a director and formally in classes. Over the years I have taught:
Most recently I' have added Coaching to my resume. After 40 years of Directing I have a number of actors with whom I've worked who call upon me to help them with major auditions.
During more than 40 years of directing (15 of of them teaching as well) I have always paid attention to both my experience and that of others around me in the theatre arts community. That awareness helped me grow personally and catalogue what works in helping others grow professionally. Consequently I've had 44 years experience, not one year's experience repeated 44 times. That's a big difference when developing some subject matter expertise.
As an experienced Director and Teacher I have come to some firm conclusions about and applied techniques to succeed in the craft of acting that I have shared in:
Acting: A Field Guide to the Craft
